He was the son of Thomas E. Dunaway and Elizabeth McKinney.1 
1870 CensusSamuel Dunnaway (given age 6) was listed as living with the family of Betsy Dunnaway (given age 42) on the 1870 Census. His place of birth was Virginia.1 
1880 CensusSaml. L. Dunnaway (given age 16) was listed as a hireling of Richard Guthrie (given age 60) on the 1880 Census. Saml. was working on the Farm. He was able to read, but was not able to write. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia.2 
AnecdoteSamuel worked for food and clothes as a hireling from the age of seven until he was 21. He never lived around his father. After he became of age, he set out on horse and wagon searching for his parents. It was said that he followed their trail until someone told him that his parents were dead, at which time he returned to Halifax County, Virginia.5 
MarriageSamuel Randall Dunaway married Mary Laura Motley, daughter of Josiah Motley and Annie Lucy Roark, on 18 February 1892 in Halifax County, Virginia. The date of marriage established from family records was 28 Feb 1892.3,4,5 
1900 CensusSamuel R. Donerway (given age 36) was listed as the head of family on the 1900 Census recorded 25 June 1900 (official date 1 Jun 1900) in Staunton District, Halifax County, Virginia. Living with him was his wife, Mary L. Donerway (given age 26). Residing in the same family with Samuel were his son John W. Donerway (given age 7), his daughter Lena H. Donerway (given age 4), his son Robert T. Donerway (given age 3) and his son Lee W. Donerway (given age 1). The census entry showed that Samuel was born in May 1864. He had been married for 8 years. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. He was a Farmer. Samuel was able to read and write and he spoke English. He rented the house the family lived in.3 
1910-CensusSamuel Randall Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1910 Census recorded 6 May 1910 (official date 15 Apr 1910) in Staunton, Halifax County, Virginia. Living with him was his wife, Mary Laura Motley. Residing in the same family were his daughter Lena Holmes Dunaway, his son Robert Thornton Dunaway, his son Lee Warren Dunaway, his daughter Minnie Lou Dunaway, his daughter Carrie May Dunaway. The census entry showed that Samuel had been married for 17 years. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. He was a farmer in general farming and worked as an employer.4 
1910-Events Samuel was able to read and write and he spoke English. He rented the farm the family lived on.4 
1920-HoFSamuel Randall Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1920 Census recorded between 9 February 1920 and 10 February 1920 (official date 1 Jan 1920) in Staunton, Halifax County, Virginia, along with his wife Mary Laura Motley. Residing in the same family were his daughter Lena Holmes Dunaway, his son Robert Thornton Dunaway, his daughter Minnie Lou Dunaway, his daughter Carrie May Dunaway, his daughter Ethel Emma Dunaway. The census entry showed that Samuel rented the home the family lived in. He was able to read and write and he spoke English. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. Samuel worked on his own account as a farmer.6 
1930-HoFSamuel Randall Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1930 Census recorded 10 April 1930 (official date 1 Apr 1930) at State Road #303 in Staunton, Halifax County, Virginia. Residing in the same family were his daughter Lena Holmes Dunaway and his daughter Carrie May Dunaway. The census entry showed that Sam rented the home the family lived in and they lived on a farm. They did not have a radio set to enjoy. Sam was a widower. He was able to read and write and he spoke English. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. Sam worked on his own account as a farmer in general farming. He was not a veteran.7 
DeathSamuel Randall Dunaway died on 29 December 1942 in Nathalie, Halifax County, Virginia, at age 78 years, 7 months and 21 days. Samuel died at home. He is buried at the nearby family cemetery.5 
BurialHe was buried at Motley Family Cemetery, Highway 501 North in Halifax County, Virginia. There are other members of the family buried in same place. His wife Mary Laura Motley lies beside him. There is a single headstone with both Samuel's and Mary's names marked.5 
ObituaryThe following is a transcription of the original obitutuary that was in a local paper that my grandmother, Ethel Dunaway Perkins (Mrs. Robert Perkins), kept. Notice the different spelling of Dunaway and the fact that Connie should be Carrie.
     "Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Childrey Baptist Church for Samuel Dunnaway, 78, who died at his Nathalie home early Wednesday morning. The Rev. Robert S. Booker, pastor of the Brookneal Baptist Church, conducted the services and burial was in the family cemetery near the home. Mr. Dunnaway, a lifetime tobacco farmer, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dunnaway. His wife died many years ago. He is survived by these children: Misses Lena and Connie Dunnaway, Nathalie; Mrs. Samuel Perkins, Gretna; Mrs. Fred Perkins and Mrs. Robert Perkins, Halifax; John W., W. T. Dunnaway, Brookneal. Two brothers and one sister also survive: Nelson and Alexander Dunnaway, and Mrs. John Robey, all of Lynchburg."
