BirthAlexander Hallie Dunaway was born in May 1871 in Halifax County, Virginia. Although most records indicate that Alexander was born in Halifax County, it is likely that he spent at least part of his childhood near Falling River in Hat Creek, Campbell County. Hat Creek feeds into Falling River in Campbell County and Falling River feeds into Roanoke River. The Roanoke River is the dividing line between Campbell and Halifax Counties.3,1,4,5,2 
He was the son of Thomas E. Dunaway and Elizabeth McKinney.1,2 
1880 CensusAleser N. Dunaway (given age 9) was listed as the son of Thos. Dunaway (given age 59) and Salle S. Dunaway (given age 46) on the 1880 Census. Aleser was a Farm Laborer. He attended school within the past year. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia.1 
Marriage LicenseAlex Dunaway and Emma Angel obtained a marriage license on 6 December 1892 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. W.B. Shepherd,Clerk of Court, granted license for the marriage. The marriage license indicated that the marriage was going to take place on 7 Dec 1892 and that Alex was a farmer.2 
HistorySarah Will Dunaway was shown as the mother of Alex Dunaway on the marriage license of Alex Dunaway and Emma Angel. Sarah was the mother that Alex knew for most of his life up to the time of his marriage, but Elizabeth Dunaway was his biological mother.2 
MarriageAlex Dunaway married Emma Angel, daughter of Henry Angel and Mary Ann (W/o Henry Angel) (--?--), on 8 December 1892 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The marriage was performed by John S. Glass. The marriage ceremony was held at the residence of the groom's brother.2
1900 CensusAlex. H. Dunnaway (given age 29) was listed as the head of family on the 1900 Census recorded 30 June 1900 (official date 1 Jun 1900) in Rustburg District, Campbell County, Virginia. Living with him was his wife, Emma Dunnaway (given age 27). Residing in the same family with Alex. were were his daughter Annie Dunnaway (given age 8), his son John H. Dunnaway (given age 6), his daughter Jett E. Dunnaway (given age 4), his son Sampson Dunnaway (given age 3) and his son Clifton T. Dunnaway (given age 4 months). The census entry showed that Alex. was born in May 1871. He had been married for 9 years. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. He was a Farm Laborer. Alex. was not able to read or write, but he spoke English. He rented the house the family lived in.4

1910-CensusAlexander Hallie Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1910 Census recorded 29 April 1910 (official date 15 Apr 1910) in Staunton, Halifax County, Virginia, along with his wife Virginia Belle Trent. Residing in the same family was his daughter Jettie Elizabeth Dunaway. The census entry showed that Alexander had been married for 3 years. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. He was a farmer in general farming and worked on his own account.5 
1910-Events Alexander was not able to read or write, but he spoke English. He rented the farm the family lived on.5 
1920-HoFAlexander Hallie Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1920 Census recorded 20 April 1920 (official date 1 Jan 1920) in Lewiston, Lunenburg County, Virginia, along with his wife Virginia Belle Trent. Residing in the same family were his son Hallie Sander Dunaway, his daughter Helen Virginia Dunaway, his daughter Lena Mae Dunaway and a boarder Charlie Buchanan. The census entry showed that Alexander rented the home the family lived in. He was not able to read or write, but he spoke English. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. Alexander worked for wages as a sawyer at the sawmill.6 
1930-HoFAlexander Hallie Dunaway was listed as the head of family on the 1930 Census recorded 12 April 1930 (official date 1 Apr 1930) at Unimproved Dirt Road in Oak Hill Township, Granville County, North Carolina. Living with him was his wife, Virginia Belle Trent. Residing in the same family were, his daughter Lottie Dunaway, his son Lewis Thomas Dunaway Sr. and his daughter Madeline Dunaway. The census entry showed that Elec rented the home the family lived in and they lived on a farm. They did not have a radio set to enjoy. Elec was 35 years old when he first married. He was not able to read or write, but he spoke English. His place of birth, as well as that of his father and mother, was Virginia. Elec worked for wages as a laborer at the saw mill, but was unemployed. He was not a veteran.7 
DeathAlexander Hallie Dunaway died on 1 October 1948 at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Independent City, Virginia, at age 77 years and 5 months. Alexander died from bronchopneumonia.
